Blog Post #2

I've mostly used Microsoft Word for writing papers and doing school projects. I've seen my teachers use it for creating handouts, tests and project assignments. Fairly versed in Word but I am learning that there many more functions in this software that I was not even aware of.

In high school copyright and fair use was not something I was taught much about. In college, it could not be preached more to avoid plagiarism and copyright infringement at all costs. I've had to learn how to give credit to sources and citing them when necessary. As a teacher I would make sure to have a good understanding of all fair use guidelines to avoid having any issues and explain to my students why it's important to not take credit for another's work.

Previous to this class I had only used twitter for receiving updates to my phone regarding certain company rewards programs. In this class I can see how twitter can be used for much more like connecting students, parents and teachers for purposes such as assigning work, reminders or just posting useful links and information. I think that personal learning networks have a great advantage that can further improve the educational system and how teachers and parents also can remain connected about the student's education.

Computers are an important part of the educational experience because they have the ability to help students learn in different ways. While technology certainly is useful for teaching students, it is not a complete substitute for a teacher and a traditional learning environment. Computers also can make it easier for students to write assignments and be able to use the internet as a resource for finding information.

I think that the ISTE standards are important because they provide a set of guidelines of what's expected in how to implement technology properly. Standard 3b. "Collaborate with students, peers, parents and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation" would one that I feel I could implement easily given the increasing amount of social media being developed to keep people connected and inspire others. Standard 1b. "Engage students in  exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources" may be a little difficult for me as I am not sure on how I would use technology to relate to real-world issues and would be interested in learning different tools to do so.

To be a digital native is to have been born within the age of technology and have an understanding of it from an early age. I agree with this term because I believe that most digital natives(if not all) have had some contact with technology in some way, shape or form. Being able to financially acquire a device is another matter but I find that it's almost impossible that someone in this age has not at least had some experience with a computer because of technology's increasing popularity. I have seen some differences between me and some of my professors in that while they are not completely technologically incompetent there are some students who tend to be more technologically savvy in understanding more complex functions in not just just computers but technology in general. Though these differences don't really make much of an impact. I anticipate to keep up with my future students in the realm of technology because I've been using computers for so long and often that it would be hard to not keep up.

Blog Set-Up Post

My previous experience with technology is about average in comparison to others my age. I grew up in a Macintosh household and while I have a basic understanding of Windows and its software I'm not as well versed in it as I am with Apple products. I have both worked on and used gaming consoles and have a good understanding of how they work. I have done graphic design projects using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as well as presentations on Keynote.

In this class I hope to learn how to use Excel as it is the only program in Microsoft office that I have not had any experience with. I would also like to learn other skills that would further my familiarity with Windows' operating system. I would also like to learn how to use technology to effectively teach students in the future.

The questionnaire revealed that on all levels I rank as fairly balanced between both sides of the scale. In the first I lean more towards reflective which I relate to because I find that reviewing material helps me remember it. Sensing I leaned towards more and from that I learned that relating material I learn in school is best absorbed if I can relate it to the real world. I am also a visual learner which I relate to very much as it's hard for me to picture things on my own without some sort of visual representation. And as more of a global learner I need to understand the main idea before going into smaller themes within the big idea.
